Maruti made a record
Maruti Suzuki has made a new record by achieving the target of dispatching 20 lakh vehicles using railways. The special thing is that Maruti Suzuki is the first automobile company in India to achieve such a feat.
How was the performance
Maruti has increased the dispatch of its vehicles through railways from 65,700 units in FY 2014-15 to 447,750 units in FY 2023-24. Railways provide a congestion-free, safe and energy-saving option for these vehicles as compared to sending them through road. Today, the company sends vehicles to 20 places using Indian Railways and provides its services in more than 450 cities.
Company officials said this.
After achieving this feat, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said that Maruti Suzuki pioneered the use of railways for dispatch of vehicles more than a decade ago by becoming the first company in India to obtain an Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator License.
Since then, the company has systematically increased the dispatch of vehicles using railways. Through green logistics, we have achieved a cumulative reduction of 10,000 metric tonnes in CO2 emissions and a cumulative fuel saving of 270 million liters. Our production capacity is to almost double to four million units by FY 2030-31. We plan to increase the use of railways in the dispatch of vehicles to about 35 per cent in the next seven to eight years. We are committed to achieving the Government of India’s net zero emission target by 2070.
PM Modi had launched
Earlier this year, under the PM Gati Shakti program, PM Modi inaugurated India’s first automobile in-plant railway siding at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat facility. The facility has a capacity to dispatch 300,000 vehicles every year. Construction of a railway siding is also underway at Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar facility and will be operational soon. Using Indian Railways to send vehicles supports the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 which focuses on climate action.
